Diary of Albatena Christensen Davenport
( Grandma’s diary is quite small measuring 4 ¼ x 5 ¾ and about 1 inch thick. It is bound in a light brown leather material with lovely burgundy splotches on it. In gold leaf the words “My Five Years” are stamped.
Inside the front cover is written in hand “To Mr.s John Davenport…By the Nampa Auzziliary (Auxilliary)…July 4th 1930“. Also written are notes in Grandma’s handwriting, mostly phone numbers, addresses and names.)
(A second diary was found halfway through this one. The second one is in a 4x6 spiral bound pad. The front and back page are on a medium weight light green cardstock. The front of the notebook says “GOLDEN WEST NOTES” with a rising sun over mountaintops behind the words. Near the bottom it has a price of 5 cents. That diary will be inserted in the appropriate dates but the font will be the same as this note. The dates for this diary are from July 11th, 1955 to December 23, 1956.)
*In order to convey the contents accurately the spelling is given as Grandma wrote it. Anything in parenthesis has been added by me…Grandma wasn’t always the best with punctuation! Grandma was a creative speller and punctuation happened sometimes but mostly she skipped using any. She was random in capitalization and seemed to favor capitalizing some letters more than others no matter where in the sentence they appeared.

June 21 - Niels and I left for Canada(.) got as far as Marions at Donnelly that night(.) started out Tusday for our Wonderfull Trip thrue the mountains of Ida and Montana(.) I Went With them to the Temple and We all Went to all cinds of meetings(.) the first Weeks there Was thir Jubely(,) 50 years since the first Mormens settled in Cardston and on July the 12 We started Back(.) We Went thrue the Glashir Natonal Park and first night We got a Cabin at Eurika(.) the second night We got a cabin at Cardelaine (Coeur d’Alene)(.) the 3 night We got a Cabin at Grangevill and go to Marions Thrusday none (night?)(.) stayed there till Sunday(.) got Home Sunday 18(.) hold (had) bin gone 4 Weeks monday morning and to day Niels and I have Eragated and Washed and I have so much to think about of that Wonderfull Trip thanks to Brother N.C.

1 for Vivian Resor(,) 2 Dolls(.) Besides that I made 2 coats(,) 3 Rugs(,) 1 quilt for my own Children
1939---November I made 2 Rugs for Mrs. Duval 3 Dollars and 1 for mrs. Nicestrum 3 Dollars and I made 2 coats 3 aprons and 3 Rugs for my own Children
1939--Dec I made Yvonne a large Rug and mrs. Edith Gran a large Round one and Loraine a coat and xmas things
Sweet Pickles
Wash 75 cucumbers 3 or 4 inches long cut in pieces ¾ inches long(.) makes about 2 gal. Put in jar pour over 2 cups salt and one gallon of boiling water..let stand one week---skin when necessary. On the 8th drain well and pour over one gal. of fresh boiling water and one tablespoon of powdered alum--let stand 24 hours. On 9th day drain and pour over one gal of boiling water let stand 24 hrs. on tenth day drain and pour over them boiling hot the following 5 pints strong vinegar
6 cups sugar
½ ounce celery seed
1 ounce stick cinnamon
On each succeeding day for 3 days drain off liquid and reheat each time pouring over pickles while hot. Adding one cup of sugar each time.
Bread & Butter Pickles
3 qts sliced cucmbers (unpeeled)
4 large onions -- 1 green pepper
Let stand in water over nite(.) Drain and add: 2 cups sugar
1 qt vinegar and a little water
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground mustard
1 tsp powdered timeric
1 tsp celery seed
Boil hard ten minutes(.) You may add pepper and celery to salt water ½ cup salt
